As Susan Scott, an author I mentioned in an earlier blog, pointed out to me: there are very few examples of 17th century Court dress in existence today. All the more extraordinary, then, this new exhibit at Versailles: Court pomp and royal ceremonies: court dress in Europe 1650-1800. The fact that I'm one very big ocean -- and even bigger life -- away is somewhat torturous to me! It's on until June 28: I have that long to be very strongly tempted.

Sandra, this site leaves me absolutely speechless. What incredibly beautiful clothing! I'm always astounded by the level of craftsmanship -- the fabric, the embroidery, the embellishments -- that went into a single garment of court dress in this period. The handwork's just exquisite. Arggh!
Hmmm.... let's see: my daughter's tuition for next semester, or Versailles....
